well thats a complex question
firstly what is your class/lvl
1 point that practically noone will argue with is that you should never get tatoos before lvl 40
to get a tatoo you need 10 dyes
not all classes can wear all tats
most tats are useless to alot of classes
when you get a tat you usually trade something you have (e.g hp) for something you want (e.g attack)
you can not trade magic stats for fighter stats (e.g mana for attack)
tatoos are fairly expensive (100k+ install fee up to 500k per dye)but generally worth it
i got str - con on my ws and even though at the time i could barely afford it i never regreted it for 1 second
that should clear it up abit but if you want to know what tats you need we need to know your class

Okay, thanks for the response. Now it is my turn. My class is a human mystic. I plan to go the path of the Cleric, and then ultimately become a Prophet, and then a Hierophant.
So, I have given you all my information.

Ohh yeah, I am level 17. And, why do you say not to get any before level 40?

becaue tatoos are expencive as hell.
if you draw a tat before lvl 40, at 40, you gotta remove it and get a whole new set of tats.
post lvl 40 tats can easily run upto 4mill (dyes + cost of drawing included) that's just for 1 tattoo. 3 tats = 12 mill =)

You cannot use the tattoos you buy/apply before lvl 40 after lvl 40 (I think they disappear). And since generally it does not take that long to reach lvl 40, it would just be a waste of money. Since tattoos are pretty expensive, you would be better off investing in a better weapon or in more spiritshots/soulshots.
I am not sure, but I think you cannot apply tattoos before lvl 20 anyway.
As for what you want when you reach lvl 40:
as a "healer"-type class (Prophets are classified as healer type), you should DEFINITELY go +4 WIT / -4 MEN. This will increase your casting speed at the expense of max mp and mp regen, but you will only lose a miniscule amount of max mp and you will not notice the decrease in mp regen. But oh my god will it speed up the buffing of the party you are in. This definitely is the most important tattoo for you to get.
Next would be probably +4 CON / -4 STR. You do not need STR at all as a Prophet. To get enough MP to buff a whole party of 9 players, you need a lot of mp. That's why many prophets use a weapon with the "conversion" SA, which gives +60% max mp but also -40% max hp. To get back some of the hit points, this tattoo is very good. Also quite good even if you do not use a conversion weapon, since healer classes do not have that many hp to start with anyway.
For the third tattoo, either go an additional +1 WIT / -1 MEN (always good) or get +4 DEX / -4 STR. That one will give you an increase in run speed (good if you have to flee like a little girl), but also an increase in attack speed/crit rate if you decide to help a bit in damage dealing (prophet with a dagger is not that bad, even with severely reduced strength - you will do lots of critical hits, and that is where the damage will come from).

What I wrote is what most go for - but you can of course choose yourself what you want. You do not have to play a "cookie cutter" prophet :)
Also, think about your choice of class when you lvl up from 20 to 40. A Prophet is always nice to have because of the buffs (and if you ever should buy a second account, you can start new characters on that one and buff yourself with your prophet), but from what I have seen so far it is not that interesting to play in the higher levels. Basically, you buff everybody in the party and then you have to regen the mana to be ready to buff again when the buffs fade. And that means sitting around because the mp won't regen fast enough otherwise. Bishop might actually be a more interesting class to play, because you can take part in the action by keeping other players alive with your heals. But you will have enough time to find out what you like better when you get into groups later on (around lvl 30 or so it will be better for you to party with other players because by then you will have a hard time killing mobs on your own).

Why would you go with a +4 / -5 tat ?
Just cause it's cheaper?
In that case, a +4 / -6 would be even cheaper :p
A +4 / -4 tat from the mammon is 174k AA.
Dunno about your server, but on mine, AA goes for 2a. So 1 dye is 348k. 10 dyes that's 3,480,000 Adena, + 680k to apply the dye. 4m for 1 tat.

+4 -5 dye is 40,5k on Teon, Giran. So basically ~750k with installation - guess how many times cheaper. And when you are nuker some stats does not matter or matter little.
