I have noticed while hunting in the forest of the dead that the xp mobs give changes often. For example I will kill Bone grinders and get 12k xp then kill the exact same one standing 10 ft from it and get 7k. This is a common event with a lot of the mobs in the forest. Vampire warlords vary from night to day. At night they give about 9k xp but during the day they give 13k. I have noted the levels and the abilities of the mobs and nothing seems to change they have the same weaknesses the same attacks and attributes they stay the same color so as far as I can tell the level doesn't change. They also do not seem any harder or easier to kill. I was just wondering if this is an error or how it was intended?

If someone damages a mob, but does not kill it, it will regen HP and look like it is undamaged. But when killed the percentage of damage the prior attacker did is reflected in lower xp given to the killing dude.

yes I know that and thats not the case here. when you hunt one area you can see the mobs spawn in and know if anyone is around to attack them.

The Notes for C4 indicate many weird types of mobs have been added. One is listed as: 'Monsters whose bodies get bigger after using buff skills have been added.' Perhaps this is just the mob's image getting bigger, but suppose 'bodies get bigger' is a loose translation of 'HP increases." Since xp is a reflection of how much HP you had to get through to kill the mob, a HP-buffed mob would give you more xp than one you killed without it buffing itself.
There is also an entry stating that: 'Self-destructing monsters have been added.' If you attack one of these, your xp relates to the damage you do before it 'self-destructs.' That may result in lower xp from mobs that self-destruct early.
There is another entry for: 'Couple-type monsters have been added.' This could just be a party of mobs, but that wouldn't be 'added' since we had lots of those in C3 and prior. Suppose this refers to mobs that seem to be the same, but are different (mobs come in a 'couple' of types.)
Also, for the new areas, Stratics lists multiple-mobs with the same name, but different drops. In the Forest of the Dead, it lists 4 entries for Requiem Behemoth (2 each of level 67 and 70.) Perhaps there are more 'variants' that Stratics hasn't identified yet.
I'm speculating a lot here, but I bet that this type of discovery is an intended part of the C4 additions. Surprises are put in, and we just have to discover them ourselves.
As to the vampires, I would expect that they would vary significantly from daytime to nighttime. If they didn't, folks would say they are not acting like 'real' vampires.

You can strike this one off your list of possible causes. The trees in DC now get bigger when they buff themselves and they give no more xp when they're bigger than when they're normal size. Plus, you can physically see them get bigger and then shrink when you kill them, so I think the OP would know if it were that type of mob.
I've also noticed several mobs who give different amounts of xp for no reason at all (it seems). And no, they weren't damaged by someone else first, they spawned, I killed them, I got less xp. It's just weird.

There are 2-3 [technically] different mobs with the same name and appearance. Check l2wh.com and you'll see that there are 2 different Bone Grinders with different skills.

Buffalo slaves get bigger when they spawn the shrink when they die.
