well it is meant to be a europe server like teon.....

Rhadagast

Uh...it is a European server, not a North American one. I think it would be hard to tell all Europeans to speak English.

If they don't understand you, try pig latin.

Heck, I might pretend not to understand you just so I can see pig latin!

Let me put it this way...

After being repeatedly told to play on Teon, cause I would belong there (being not from NA), I will get mightly agressive to anyone, who would now try to "claim" Franz or Teon for the NAs.

If you do not understand a word on Teon, that is your problem. We may speak the language we want. Most of us can speak english, but choose not to temporarily. Either to make known, who we are, or because there is no reason for you to understand us.

Guess what, if I want to be understood by everyone, I will speak english... That is the reason, why I write this post in english... and all posts on the german fansite in german :)

I speak english to those that dont understand Finnish, easy, no? Thats why you see so many different languages on Teon and on Franz now. Europeans talk with their countrymen using their own languages and if they need to deal with people that dont speak their language they either use english or some other language that both know. And the most common non-english languages you will see are german, french and russian(with dialects depending on the coutnry they live in but most of them understand each other) So learn one of them and you get lots of new friends ;)

After all, they're EURO servers so why not use European languages?

Off-Topic, but somehow fitting: Did you know that Russian is usually used as a substitute for Orcish in German LARPs? :)

Lol good reply there.

Frankly I do not care if people speak any language I do not know if I do not have to interact with them.

Within a clan I think it goes without saying that some unity of language is preffered.

I am Dutch and I do know a little of english / french and german so I would most likely be able to get around. And who knows I may pick up a language while being around on the Euro servers.
Danish would be an example of a language as I think that 1 is somewhat like Dutch if I were to read it outloud.

I find it secretively somewhat funny when english oriented people are somewhat suspicious when I chat with my fellow country-men in my native tongue. (Yes, I can be evil that way hehehe)

SilverWolfEcho

Most Europeans know enough english to understand what you're saying. Some of them will reply in English, some not.

Just understand that if you ask a question, such as this dialogue I encountered in ally chat a long time ago:

Them: <Insert russian stuff here> emi?
Me: Is he asking for craft/mats on an emi? I can help if someone will translate.
Them: <Russian stuff> emi <more russian>?
Me: I can craft emi bow and have an extra recipe and have basic mats. I can help if someone will translate.
Them: <more russian>
Another ally player that speaks both russian and english: SwS Lfg
Me: .. ok, I guess you don't want my help.

It's hard to be helpful when someone doesn't speak your language and no one is willing to translate it to english.

I speak english on the general chat out of education, so everyone understands me. I only speak my mother language (spanish) on the general chat if I'm ticked off or trying to prove something. When I party with people from my country, I speak Spanish unless there's someone who doesn't understand it.

Well...I am from NA. However, I speak enough German to converse and understand. Some of my regular friends have smatterings of French, Russian, Spanish, etc., just enough to ask for directions and such. I look at the language thing as an opportuity to learn more of a second and pick up (possibly really rude) smatterings of a third. To me, the whole multiple language thing is just too cool! :D

How can the NA's claim a server an order you to speak English? you know English is from ENGLAND right? =P

Yes im not a language specialist, i speak English, being from the UK along with a tiny bit of Spanish that i can remember from school lol. If Germans wanna speak german thats fine, just dont yell 'HEAL' in german and expect me to know what your talking about =P

That I don't understand either.

From an outsider's perspective (I'm from central Europe), most people in NA speak one of the three languages:

- English
- Spanish
- French

To be truly considered a NA server, it should also support at least all of the official languages of the region. In addition to the three above, those would be:

- Haitian Creole
- The 63 other "national languages" of Mexico, starting with Nahuatl and Quiché
- The official languages of Canada (Besides English and French: Cree, Inuktitut and so on)

Too bad the USA is behind its neighbours as far as the adoption of the native languages as official languages goes, or I'd have to mention at least Navajo and Cherokee here, too. :)

Navaho, for one, is impossible to learn completely unless you begin at ~age 3-5... making appropriate language teachers difficult to find. Besides, with it's excellent use as a code, who'd want to publicize it?

It annoys me like crazy when people speak languages I don't understand in shout. Out of courtesy to my fellow players, I never speak Danish in shout - only English, unless it's just one or two sentences. Otherwise I PM the person I want to talk to.

tbh I think the ppl that are able to speak english, will more or less do it all the time.. but some ppl haven't study english in their school and stuff like that.. well what can you do about it.. you just have to accept it. And like some ppl said before in the thread, it is not NA where everyone having English(american) as their mother tongue.

I think you are just silly if you can't accept a few ppl speaking a different language..

over and out from a Swedish person :)

english aint hard :/

i knew english before i had it in school tbh. but thats different for everyone im sure. offcourse i cant "demand" any form of primary language usage, im just a bit annoyed that i cant have a server like the NA ones, just with euro times. because honostly i even talk english to dutch people most the time, and the only reason i tried franz was because of the time difference.

anyway.. meeeh. dat was leuk of niet dan... lekker boeiend ook

I guess you are from Netherlands and tbh that is not really one of the countries that ain't so bad on English. Have you played with alot of ppl from Russia maybe? :> I mean no offence but ppl from Russia or the former Soviet ain't that good on English or ain't able to understand a sh it.. not many from France understand English either even if they are one of the biggest countrys..(but they want to make French a international language, so abit QQ) but what the heck... this is nothing you will be able to escape from.. (exactly like bots ^^ they are all over the gaming world)

But i'm not the one to decide if you want to accept it or not :) probly my last comment on this thread ;P
