How do i just walk up to someone, and start killing them?
This guy called skilbooks was like 'hey hit me or i kill you' and shortly after that i was killed. :(
So how can i fight? i thought this entire game was just PVP?
We were outside in the open, not in a city of anything, but by where the imps and wolves hang out, outside dark elf village.

Here's the thing here, from personal experience, the 'tards that do that, are usually much, much higher lvl than you, they suck at pvp so they roam around lowbie areas looking for CHEAP pvp points.
Don't flag on such ******s, let them go red if they so desire, cause one way or the other, you'll be eatin' dirt, it's just that if they go red, they jeopardize themselves more than any % of XP you might loose.

Well... if he got a newbie weapon, you can figure out (aprox) his level by the damage received, and think what to do next: either to hit back or run. Though a low lvl character cannot evade from a high lvl PKer's desire to kill you, to add one more point to his "portofolio".

If yer under 20, kill the newbie mobs and challenege/flag on others in the area who are also grinding if you like, but do not respond to those who are not trying to grind out of newbiedom. Guaranteed they are 20+ levels higher than you because thats generally the only way those types will even flag.
They are farming easy PvP points.
It takes 2 hours of easy XPing to grind the first 20 levels...
It takes 2 hours of hard grind to make your XP bar move a LITTLE in the 7x levels.
Let em go red and pay the price... you lose 30 seconds of XP, he loses a lot more if he is higher.

2 days casually. 12 hrs from the most hardcore player in toppest of toppiest and plvl box i ever saw. 2 hrs? i need some of whatever youre smoking.
fighting in l2 is teh sux. ignore whomever is trying to kill you and eventually (after about 5 kills on you) they will stop and log off. feel free to hunt wherever.

/sigh
Just because you cannot do it does not mean it isn't possible.
1-20 is a breeze now... especially with herbs and newbiebuffs.
2 DAYS? I can see 2 2-hour sessions if you aren't very experienced and need to spend some time figuring out the interface... and running through places exploring and not getting any XP. but TWO DAYS?
Anyone familiar with mob placement will be 20 very VERY quickly.
Note that it is actually possible faster provided you have a higher-level buffer willing to help.
Spud... some of us don't need drugs in order to concentrate on something for 10 minutes or longer.
Gotta love the ADD generation...

12 hours sounds rather high - I only have a lowbie prophet and crappy weapons, and it went faster than that for me. Even faster on a nuker with a recharger (no emp) there.

Hrm, I do any nuker 1-20 and class changed in just under 6 hours, with prophet and SE buffs and recharges obviously.
I would love for someone to tell me the secret to doing it in 2 hours.

Gotta go with Spud on this one.
Not that this is much of a conversation to argue over but I think suggesting to a new player that "1-20 is 2 hours of easy exp'ing" is a little bit of an exaggeration.
I started an orc fighter about 2 weeks ago--and obviously he was twinked. It was my second orc melee and third orc overall so I knew the area pretty well.
In around 3hours I had hit lvl 15. Burning ss and pots and no break or pause.
I think we can accept a couple things--as this is about my 20th toon in a year going to first class change I tend to know my way around starter areas.
I had no requirement to run quests since I am wealthy enough in game to skip those for a low alt.
I was able to give the new toon EVERYTHING necessary to make the leveling as fast as possible.
I would guess it took another 3-4 hours of very casual play to hit lvl 20 (the next 5 lvls).
Lvl 1-10 takes about an hour solo (for the record, "solo" means one--alone--one account--without others--no help).
Like Spud, I'd like to generate a new alt and tag along with you if you can go from 1-20 in "2 hours" cause I also don't think it can be done in any way, shape, or form. Not even close.
I suppose if your 'new toon' gets put in a cata group on AF or something and that group is in their 50's maybe the exp falls like rain.
But running around killing goblins and orcs and werewolves and bears and spiders....1-20 in 2 hours?
Nah. Not solo.
We should probably be careful not to hint to new people that they have expectations of 1-20 in 2 hours. This strikes me as the hollow boasts of people when Franz was launching....(lmao)...."I can go 1-40 in 5 days! And I'll have 10 million in adena when I get there!".......
yeah--right.
A week after Franz launched there was a post asking us all how far we had gotten. I was at 16. Most were in high 20's. A couple were in mid-30's...and they admitted they had played non-stop for a week.
The 'average' amount of adena people claimed to have amassed at lvl 20 was about 200k. I don't believe after a week a single person even had C-grade store gear.
That is a more realistic picture to paint for new players I believe.
Without 'easy' access to equipment and outside adena, it was fascinating to see how much harder the game became!
THAT is the game that truly new players experience---no 'solo' with a dual box, no 'new toon' with top ng gear, no clanmates standing guard or powerleveling. Just them, an apprentice sword (or whatever) and their newbie buffs after lvl 8 and the pots that drop and lowbie mobs.
It's not the same experience those of us with the means to help our low toons have.

so does anyone know if sylvan offers a speed leveling course? :p some of us actually like to experience the game and enjoy what we're doing rather than judging one another based on the amount of time necessary to go from 1-20.
to paraphrase i line i'm relegated to using time and again in-game: "fraps or it didn't happen." i would very much like to see you go from 1-20, in your starter gear with your newbie buffs and herbs, in <=2hrs, since you have stated that this is possible merely by having someone knowledgeable in mob locations.
the gauntlet has been thrown down.

Hold on here... I accepted 2-4 hours worth of actual play time as being reasonable...
Someone made 15 in 3 hours... and Spud's 12-hour estimation is now the norm?
What?
You people are telling me that you need 9 hours of playtime to go from 15 to 20?
I can accept that perhaps my times are not normal... perhaps I have simply made too many lowbies for my own good.
I cannot accept that a reasonably competent player would take 12 hours of gametime to level up to 20 at this point.
Perhaps its time to delete one of my toons and time it.

Ah Hah! this I can answer. I have done it. If you summon someone to the cats and they have not joined one of 2 things happens. They appear beside you and then 30 seconds later (approx) they vanish and find themselves outside by the pool. Or...they simply arrive next to the pool outside. I have had both happen.

It really doesn't matter how quickly we can do it (with top gear, buffers, knowledge of best hunting spots, etc). To say to a new player, who probably has few friends and crappy gear, that it should only take 2 (or 6 or 12) hours to reach 20 is absurd.

0-20 in 5 hours with just se buffs on a spellsinger wannabe
it could prolly be done in 4 hours since i was messing round a bit and trying different areas
first time i went 0-20 it took 2 weeks so dont freak out :P
I had just started playing L2 not that long ago (most of it off and on as I was checking out another game at the same time) and I would say it took me as a brand new player without knowing anyone or anythign at least 14-16 hours of playing time to reach level 20. I will say I did a lot of running around tho looking at differnet things and general exploring, but usually killing things as i went.

Well, I have lvl'd a dwarf from 1-20 in about 8 hrs play time. Fully twinked. Just starting out, I would say 20=20 if you do the quests for adena and weapons. So, don't worry about how long it takes. This game is not about who does it faster/better. Its about, and before you flame me....shut up....its about having FUN.

Actually I think my post said "1-15 in about 3 hours" and also said "15-20 in another 3-4 hours".
that would be a total of 6-7 hours for lvl 1-20, I think.
My son also recently began playing L2 (his first mmorpg). I talked to him and fed him some top NG gear. Didn't level with him or anything and I'll admit, all by his newbish self he got to like 24 in 3 days. I know he only played a couple hours the first night but I "think" he played about 5 hours a day for the next couple of days.
In the neighborhood of 12 hours I'm guessing he hit 24.
Again, THIS IS AN ACADEMIC argument!!! It doesn't really matter if it takes 6, 8, 12, 20, or 5 years.
I think some of us just reacted to a suggestion to a new player that somehow they might be 1-20 in "2 hours of easy xping".
That seems a bit outside of what most experience and felt like it should be balanced with other opinions so the OP doesn't use "2 hours to lvl 20" as a yardstick.
Nothing more. If you can get exp that fast more power to ya.

Ok Back before the Big Boom nerf you could lvl 1-20 in 30 minutes or so. IF you could big boom in ABG. Now it should I would say 6 to 12 hours of hard play.

0-20 in 5 minuets before the boom nerf
boom (http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/2857/boomcv2.jpg)
1 pull from a lvl 1 big boom
you could easily triple that xp with a higher lvl boom and note the group leaders are still alive

1-20 with nuker or melee takes me about 5-8h depends if Im lazzy or just wanna get to Dgrade very fast. this is with OOP SE/PP
anyway, summon friend wont work. I guess its same thing as when you logg in a cata, and get back when the event period begin, you will get ported out.

Although we have gone away from the topic the truth is that with TOP NG GSAPS SS and HP to spam for instance at TI (where golems rest northeast) u can easily go 15-20 in less than 3 hours. 1-15 wont take more than 3 hours also so I think 6 hours of NON-STOP grinding can get you at lvl 20 (I did thid with my TH using a TOP NG dual handed 1-20)
how long it takes for a Newbie to go from 1-20 doesnt matter... the advice in the post you guys are arguing over is still sound. a high level going red on a lowbie hurts himself much more than the smaller guy. a 4% death for him (to relieve karma) would take significantly longer to repair than any pre-40's death costs that made him red in the first place >.>

Actually this is not so much a result of appearing in a catacomb when you're not signed up (or on the losing side), it is a "skill" the mobs in the catacomb have. If you are in a hallway far away from any mobs when the validation week ends and then wait until the mobs for the competition week appear without you being signed up, you will not be ported out. As soon as you get close to a mob (like 900 range), you will be ported outside, though. So I guess if you summon a pre-20 toon into a safe spot in a catacomb (hallway), it might be possible to party and PL him, he will not be able to attack any mobs himself, though :)
Heartfang
12-29-2006, 01:49 AM
may be true. I noticed most times when that happened I can walk in the hallway and it takes some time for me to be ported outside, but the last 2 times I still where in cata without signed up, I was ported out even when I was in hallway. one time I was faar more away then 900 range, and the other time I was already outside when I logged in. Im not sure how this works tbh.

I am out of slots on my main server and had little time to fiddle with it... so:
Started level 1 DE fighter on a server my wife played a few newbies on... highest character was 9th level. No twink gear at all.
Ironman solo... no help, no buffs.
level 5 in 15 minutes...
level 7 in 30 (ran to town to get skills)
At that rate, I'd be 10th in 50 minutes total or so... even with no twink gear.
Took a level 15 DWARF to 17 (from 11% in to 15 to 13% into 17 in 37-38 minutes... he has top NG gear. Ironman solo... no buffs, no help, no 2nd-box or clannies helpin out.
This wasn't top secret or even remotely difficult... I was both spoiling and picking up all my loot.
Given the XP curve, the dorf is on track for 4 hours-ish... not a 2-hr winner, but certainly less than 12 hours by a LONG shot.
The main point being of course... XP at lower levels is VERY VERY easy.
Fastest XP in the game period 12-20 is melee using a polearm and having a high-level healer/buffer pull for you... Nevermind cats/Necrop... go to the newbie dungeons or anyplace with a high mob content that is aggro. Healer must be able to keep you up, but you get the hang of it fast. This way is quite fun.
