When will the official website be updated?
The website update is a very involved project. Before updates can be posted, a lot of careful decision-making, extensive research and rewriting, and approval from many departments is involved. We are working to bring you a new and improved site that will be easy to use and automatically updated as new game updates are released. Plans for updating the website are ongoing, and we will implement the changes when they are done.
Are there any plans to incorporate a wiki-style format to the Lineage II website?
No, there are currently no plans to do that.
How often do you read the reported posts and actually check the validity of the complaint?
I check those all the time. I always check the thread that the reported post is in and read everything to better understand the context of the words. If the post is so offensive that it merits an infraction, it receives one.
Can extra payment methods, such as PaySafeCard, be added to the Account section of the NCsoft website?
The NCsoft website that handles account reactivations and other functions is beyond my area of influence, as I am specifically dedicated to Lineage II only. As always, suggestions on how to improve and expand NCsoft services are welcome. Please submit any suggestions regarding the NCsoft site in a support ticket.
You post on the boards often. Do you enjoy it, or find that the players enjoy it?
I like to try to be a part of conversations that I can be useful to, especially those regarding website or game issues. Occasionally, I post for fun, as I like to participate in a casual way. I want everyone to be comfortable approaching me, and it’s important to me to share on a more personal level at times.
Do you post on the forums as a player with a different account?
No, Sace is my only identity.
Since you're now a player of Lineage II, if you were to make a post in the "Game Suggestions" forum, what would it be and why?
Since I can’t post as an anonymous player on the forums, posting in the game suggestions forum would be a bit redundant because I can skip that step and go straight to discussing suggestions for game improvements with other staff members. If a suggestion I have gains popularity, the suggestion would rapidly escalate further up the line. However, I think that player feedback is essential for some topics before a suggestion can officially be put forward within the company. For example, many of you have asked for more Vitality events. I cannot pioneer a thread in the game suggestions forum because that is a player's privilege only. I try to guide your replies about game suggestions to be as constructive and descriptive as possible.
[Game]
If you were forced to compare Lineage II to other games you used to know, what are the strongest and weakest aspects of Lineage II that you would consider changing?
In my opinion, the subclass system is a great feature in the game as it allows you to experience different classes without having to create a new character. I find the game’s biggest weakness to be the rather low server populations. The low population leads to many people multiboxing. I think that everyone’s game experience benefits from grouping with live players, and it is definitely something that I want to change by bringing more players to Lineage II.
How many GMs work on each server?
GMs aren’t assigned to a specific server. We have full staff to cover all servers 24/7.
Why are there so many automated players and RMT spammers in the game again now?
Since we’ve opened up free trials there has indeed been an increase in chat spammers, and we are working to control that outbreak. It is difficult to balance the necessary game functions that a new player should enjoy with the restrictions that keep people from abusing the free trials. We will continue to combat spammers and automated players, as well as evaluate the benefits of offering free trials.
Are you planning to give us one event per month?
When planning events, sometimes we can rerun a previous event, sometimes we can run newly created events, and sometimes we can do neither. How often we can run events depends on the amount of time it takes to test the events, properly localize text, and prepare the public information for the events. Event plans also can be affected by the priorities of the other teams involved, such as QA testing bugs or new content, or my team working on the website updates, fansites, fan art, server maintenance notices, and so on.
Between the different Lineage II official territories (Korean, Russian, Japanese, and North American/European), there are large differences in the types of services (like NCCoin), events, and updates. Why are there so many differences between the territories that have legitimate Lineage II publishing licenses? Are there any plans on bringing the NA/EU territory closer to the Korean or Russian experience?
During the life of Lineage II, the game experience has evolved into a variety of versions in different parts of the world. We do not currently have any plans to implement services like those in Korea or Russia.
Can you give an official answer about server merges?
There are currently no plans to merge servers, but we are watching and assessing the server populations. If we plan a merge and it is time to announce it publicly, you will hear it here first!
Can we have more events like the Dark Lord Returns (October 2005), where GMs spawned raid bosses and there was a strong sense of roleplaying?
Due to some technical changes made to the core system of the game a long time ago, it is currently not possible to rerun this event exactly as it was. However, considering how often this request is expressed by the community, we will look into this and see if we can do something similar with our current tools and resources. No promises, though! :)
Do you ever get frustrated in your job at NCsoft West when you have to wait for NCsoft Korea to fix or change things? If you had your way, would NCsoft West have its own development team?
While I understand the benefit of having developers nearby, I also understand how and why NCsoft and its publishers work the way they do. Despite their differences, keeping all of the developers in the same place helps keep the different territories’ versions more alike than if each territory were making its own updates. A development team would be making its own decisions and therefore altering the game even further from the original version.
Will there be any improvements on the range and amount of publicity given to Lineage II?While this type of game may not be the most popular in Western and European markets, it could still attract new players.
All online games benefit from publicity, and I agree that Lineage II could do well with some. We have been reaching out into social media networks to spread knowledge of Lineage II in modern ways.
Does NCsoft West have plans to implement in-game events with paid items (like the Valentine's Day packs for Aion or some Korean events)?
There are no current plans to do so.
What is an ideal online game?
If by “online game” you mean MMORPG, I would say it needs to live up to that name literally: massively multiplayer online roleplaying game.
Massively Multiplayer: It needs to have so many players that it is impossible to meet all of them all playing the game from around the world at all times of day.
Online: The game is played by connecting to the game servers through the Internet where you can meet up in-game with other players like yourself to experience the game together.
Roleplaying Game: The game is loaded with story, lore, and content that engages the players and inspires them to participate. Players have fun many different ways while playing inside a virtual fantasy world where they can control their own experience of the game according to what they do and how they do it.
In that context, I would say that Lineage II is close to being the ideal MMORPG. The game world is always evolving with new content and the out-of-game presence is improving. The fluctuating player base keeps the interactive experience for all players constantly changing so that every day in the game is different.
Do you think is it good or not to make a lot of instances in online games?
I find that Lineage II has a healthy balance of instances and open PvP, and it offers a large variety of different approaches to the game to suit more players’ tastes.
How do you like Lineage II and the style of game that it is? Do you play often?
I like it very much, especially as I get better. I have a lot of characters, so I play all classes, though I play fighters more often than mages at the moment. I play whenever I can, but how often I can play varies depending on my workload. Because of that, my highest level character is still pretty average in power and items. I prefer PvE-type games in general, but the few times I have PvPed have been very exciting. I hope to participate in a castle siege some day!
Do you ever come into the game on your GM account to watch castle sieges or other player interactions?
I have logged in a few times to check out reported bugs or server connectivity issues, and I have also gone to Giran to look for chat spammers. When I am in-game for these reasons I make it a point to be visible so that players know that the staff is present at all times. I have yet to watch a PvP event as a GM, but I will probably do that in the near future.
Do you take advantage of your job position to improve your character’s status, especially if you are PKed on your anonymous play account?
There are strict company rules that prevent any employee from using his or her job influence, authority, or tools to alter the game for a personal character or account. Work and play are clearly divided. If I got PKed in game, I wouldn’t react any differently than any other player: I would get back on my feet, level up a bit, then hunt down the killer in-game and take sweet revenge.
How often do you engage in player versus player combat? How do you rate Lineage II’s PvP style when compared to other PvP games you might have played?
Because PvP combat in Lineage II is mostly used by high-level players, I haven’t experienced it much yet. My first impression of castle sieges is that they look like a lot of fun! Compared with other games, I would say that the lack of mid-level PvP makes the game seem a bit lonely to some players. However I believe the PvP system itself is great because if someone is going “chaotic,” he or she is treated differently than in a fair fight.
Do you like Fantasy Isle? Why is it so empty?
I suspect that Fantasy Isle is a bit neglected by players because you need to have a group of people to play the games. Or perhaps the coins and reward system is unpopular. Personally, I like Fantasy Isle a lot, and I like to play the games. By just taking a bit of time to have some fun with friends, you can collect coins and trade them for fun accessories. Who wouldn’t like that?
[As Community Manager]
Some games give community managers a lot of freedom to make changes and have a real impact on the game they manage. In that context, is Lineage II pretty set in stone and reliant on Korea for changes, or do you feel that you and your team have the necessary freedoms to tailor the game to what Western players want?
I believe that a community manager is in charge of closing the gap between the players and their best possible experience of the game. Community managers do this by improving relations between the player base and the game company both in the game and out of it, and by exchanging information. While I have the freedom to throw contests and explain upcoming events to you in my own words, there are, of course, limitations on what I can do. For example, I cannot throw in-game events that require server side scripting/coding. As far as receiving coded events, we rely on the Development Team for technical additions. When we receive a lot of detailed feedback from our players, we are more likely to have a greater impact on the direction of the events we get to run.
How do you plan to improve relations between the players and the NCsoft staff, and what is your goal in that context?
I believe that building trust between myself and the players is a big first step. Building trust is also the most difficult portion of my job. If you trust that I am doing the best I can for you, then your gaming and support experience will improve. In return, I trust you to provide honest and constructive feedback. To achieve this, Moxie and I have been working on increasing the transparency of our jobs so that you can better understand what things are in our realm of possibility and how we can achieve them.
How do you balance the community’s needs for different fansites, considering such sites cover a range from pets to roleplay to PVP and beyond?
Fansites have the freedom to choose their own focus on Lineage II features or functions. We’re happy to offer our support to them equally and fairly.
Besides moderating the forums, working with fansites, making events, and harassing the GMs, what else do you do?
I believe the most important function of my job is missing from that list: I channel all of your feedback and opinions to the people that make decisions that can change the game! Every week I write a report that includes the biggest topics on the forums, recent events and problems, statistics, charts, graphs, and goals. I am the microphone that you can use to speak to the developers, and I am also the megaphone responsible to telling you about what is going on inside the game and the company, and what we can do for you. Also, to clarify, while I do not make events directly, I do craft their presentation to the public, and I do make the contests.
As someone with no prior experience with Lineage II, how did you come to be community manager?
I was already working for NCsoft when the position for community manager of Lineage II opened. I was involved with another NCsoft West community until then. However, I was eager to be in a position where I could do more for the players. Of course, knowledge of the game is helpful in this job, but experience in community, social interaction, and psychology is essential. A person with expertise in Lineage II gameplay and knowledge would be best suited for a testing job, like Cryo is. When I need answers about things in the game that I don’t understand, I ask him or other testers and learn as I go.
What do you think your biggest accomplishment has been since you joined as the CM of Lineage II (community-wise, personally, or both)?
The thing I have been proudest of so far is the feedback reports that I give you after events are over. From the public, the report seems to be just about asking you a bunch of questions about whether you liked the event or not. But after the poll closes, I crunch all of that data into numbers, graphs, quotes, and summaries, and then provide it to various people in the company, including team members at Seoul headquarters. Through these reports, your feedback as players can influence future game events that you will receive!
Since I have started compiling and delivering these reports, some people that don’t even work on Lineage II have seen them and said, “Hey, these reports are great! I need something like this for my game/my team.” It is both a personal and work-related joy that the reports are useful. Also, I’m happy for the opportunity to explain them to you because I want you to see how important your feedback is and that it really can influence future events.

Knowing the stresses your job comes with, all the community managers and community support people that I know have something particular they do to destress. For me, I bake! What do you do?
By the time I get home (after a bus ride during which I enjoy a book or music), I’m usually pretty relaxed. I can also turn off my work brain by cooking dinner, and then playing some other computer games or watching a movie. By then, it’s sleepy time.
Do you roleplay in game?
It’s happened a couple of times. Once someone asked me what class I was. I told her that I'm an Oracle. She asked me to tell her the future. It was right before the Lovers’ Jubilee event started, so I told her, “I foresee that you will fight with a companion and see lots of roses!” I don’t know if she believed me or not, but it was fun.
What made you decide to get involved in the gaming industry?
Computer games have been my hobby since I was little. The first job I got in the industry was as entry-level tech support for an online game, and it all started to click.
What it the best way to ask you a personal question?
If you have a question for me that isn’t work-related, you can send me a private message on the forums, but I warn you that I am neither obligated to answer personal questions at all, nor answer them truthfully.
How do you usually start the working day? Coffee, cigarettes, and The Seattle Times?
When I get to work I immediately get coffee (sometimes Starbucks) and fruit for breakfast, and then more coffee throughout the morning. No cigarettes for me, and news via Internet at lunch.
What is your desktop wallpaper?
I've linked my desktop wallpaper here (http://boards.lineage2.com/showthread.php?p=2964153#post2964153).
How many shots of your favorite adult beverage do you take each time someone tells you specifically to fix their problem?
Fortunately, I don’t let accumulation of workload take a toll on my liver. Instead, I reply saying that I am doing whatever I can, because it’s true.
Have you ever been to Greece? If so, where exactly?
Yes, I have. I was there for about a week back in 1997 (long time ago, I know). I visited Mykonos, Santorini, Athens, and several other tourist-y places that I don’t recall very well (like I said, it was a long time ago). I intensely wanted to visit Delos because I like mythology, but alas, I didn’t make it.
What kind of music do you like?
Just about anything with an electric guitar. That means lots of hard rock, some heavy metal, some pop and indie, and classic rock. Also, some electronica or techno.
Do you like pandas?
Who doesn’t like pandas?
Do you hate hamsters?
No, but I sure do like zombies.
Do you prefer cake or death?
I prefer Eddie Izzard or pie.
Coca-Cola or Pepsi?
Coca-Cola only. I can’t stand any other cola.
How old are you?
I’m in the equivalent of D-grade age range. ;)
Do you want to date my avatar?
No, but I did like the music video with the cast of The Guild singing that song.
