I didn't play any other MMO's but didn't "ding" come from the sound another game made when you leveled?

I have no idea about the "woot" thing...

A good old WOOOHOOO! (Homer Style!) is good, too.

That 'ding' thing is correct.
We also get a sfx (and gfx) effect when leveling, just more elaborate than a ding nowadays.
